Initially, Rasmus Lerdorf created PHP, however, quite a number of people work on the language design now with the aim of its further expansion and development. In the course of its existence (the first version of PHP appeared in the end of 1994) the language underwent dramatic changes in the terms of both outer structure hereof (syntax, set of functions etc.), and inner organization. The last changes of this kind were applied to PHP due to appearance of the 4-th version of this language, when PHP was fully overwritten with the use of Zend scripting engine, elaborated by Zend technologies. As a result, a number of new functions could be added to its syntax making the language significantly faster than previous versions. The reason of this success is that the Zend’s scripting engine is a semi-compiler, i.e. it executes PHP code not before compiling it, whereas previous PHP versions were inherently interpreters.
As it was told earlier, the PHP syntax is to a large extent imported from such languages as C, Java and Perl. Therefore, if at least one of them is familiar to you, it would be easy to just sit down and start writing programs in PHP. Here, we won’t linger about the description the syntax – it is well described in the PHP Manual. However, I would like to dwell on some aspects distinguishing PHP from other languages.
